El ambiente destruido

Evelyn Navarrete-Castillo

Grade: 12

Card Number: 16

Refran: "Please have caution with your waste, It might get tangled up in waves."

Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on environmental pollution. I chose as a subject matter because it is something that should be important to all of us. The colors in the piece represent nature and life. The images in the piece represent how pollution can affect not only us, but animals as well. For me personally, this card represents how lots of the time, this topic is overlooked and seen as something we can worry about later. I want the audience to see that pollution can have a real impact on our planet and we should strive to prevent it.

Student Biography: My name is Evelyn Navarrete and I am a senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my mom and dad. My family is from various parts of Mexico which include Oaxaca and Mexico City. In my Loteria card, I chose to represent environmental pollution. I was inspired to draw my loteria card because I felt like pollution is a major topic that is often ignored or brushed away. I wanted to bring awareness to pollution in hopes of inspiring others to start paying more attention to our environment. The artistic process was slow yet rewarding. I started off by sketching multiple ideas and eventually combined them into a single piece. I transferred my sketch onto my canvas and started painting. Painting took time, mistakes were made and also fixed. In the end, I was able to create a painting expressing pollution. Life after high school will be adventurous. I plan on traveling to a few places during the summer before entering college. I am nervous yet excited for what the future has in store for me.
