La raza
Liliana A Solorio
Refran: "To an estranged country we carry our roots
enduring back breaking labor to provide for our youth"
Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on personal and work culture that Hispanic people bring with them when they come over to America I chose La Raza as a subject matter because it was a way to show and represent Hispanic culture in it’s beauty and not what Mexicans are stereotyped and perceived to be. The colors in the piece represent hope, our culture and values, and our independence. The images in the piece represents a glimpse of what Mexican culture is from working in the fields harvesting grapes, strawberries, and lettuce, to traditions and values that was brought from home like the altar for day of the dead and the bible. For me personally, this card represents my culture and what I think is the more beautiful and not really talked about when it comes to talking about the Hispanic/Latino race. I want the audience to see what I grew up loving, learning, and valuing. I want them to see that being Mexican is something to be proud of and they should not be ashamed of their culture but instead embrace it and learn to love their culture if they don’t love it.
Student Biography: My name is Lily Solorio, and I am a senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my mom and sisters. My family is from Michoacan, Mexico. In my Loteria card, I chose to represent the Mexican race (La Raza) and our values that have come to America with us. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was to show off my culture and many aspects that make up the La Raza living in America such as working in the fields, celebrating day of the dead, religious beliefs, and Mexican independence. The artistic process was challenging in the beginning since I was between a few topics that could really represent La Raza in its entirety. After a lot of brainstorming, I decided to piece every topic into one card that could really represent La Raza. After I got my sketch down, the painting process of the card was easier and relaxing. Life after high school will be me going to 4-year university where I will major in Political Science or Theatre Arts.
