El sin casa

Alexander Jarquin-Rodriguez

Refran: "A homeless guy holds up a sign,

day after day he receives no dime."

Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on one of America's biggest issues that must be fixed which is homelessness.  I chose homelessness as a subject matter because it's a huge conflict in American's society that has been going on for many years that must be solved.  The colors in the piece represent nothing in my Loteria Card painting.  The images in the piece represent a homeless person holding up a sign which says, "Homeless and hungry", and a person living in a apartment complex.   For me personally, this card represents the view of a homeless person and the view of a person who's not homeless. Two different aspects on the topic homelessness.  I want the audience to see through my Loteria Card painting two different views, one being of a homeless person asking for help and, the other person's view being having somewhere to sleep and live.

Student Biography: My name is Alexander Jarquin and I am a senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my parents and my sister. My family is from Mexico. In my Loteria card, I chose to represent homelessness. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was that I have seen homeless people asking for help and have seen homeless people out in the streets. Another reason I chose to represent homelessness in my Loteria card was because this is one of America's biggest issues.  The artistic process was fun when coming up with ideas and drawing your ideas down and seeing how your thoughts came to be through art. Life after high school will be going to college, I'm not sure what I'm going to study yet but hopefully after high school I know what I will study.
