La Santa Muerte
Miguel A. Montiel Lopez
Refran: "The one who takes care of your life, if you ask, we light a candle because violence is outside the door"
Card Description: For my Loteria card I wanted to share my thoughts on my belief, why I chose this illustration, and why it is important to me. I chose violence in Santa Maria as a subject matter because It is a big issue in my city, my hometown. Many years ago, when I first set foot in Santa Maria, I just knew that this would be the city we would finally get to stay at. It was lovely the grass green, wind breezing over the side of your skin no violence or danger lurking but years later you can't enjoy that without seeing people off their minds with the drugs they got nowadays. I might of not notice this when I was younger, but I definitely do now. Yesterday I went for a drive to see if their were any food truck, there weren't any, so I went to taco bell and when I got there It felt like those L.A. videos of homeless people on the streets, many had sticks whacking things. The colors in my Loteria card represents her bright future she got ahead for us. The pretty red flowers she got on her head, the long and nice blue and black cloak she has with white stars on them. For me personally, this card represents hope for me and those who believe in her. I want people to see that although violence is surrounding us, we still have hope to fight this evil spreading in our town.
Student Biography: My name is Miguel Angel Montiel Lopez, I am a senior that goes to Santa Maria High School in Santa Maria, CA. This is my first year in this High School or in any High School, I am beyond grateful that I had gotten Mr. Aguila class. Both of my parents are from Oaxaca, so therefore we are proud Oaxaquenos. I grew up with many siblings 5 to be exact. The hope that La Santa Muerte gives made me get inspired. While drawing I realized that the silence thinking made me look deeper onto what is happening to my city. For right now I feel like I am prepared for the adulthood, so I don’t really worry about what to do, school is now soon coming to an end, my plan after High School is trade school or college but one major I feel passionate about is auto motive mechanics.
