El Arrestado
Mauro Esparza-Magdaleno
Refran: "The poor color man arrested,
Because of his skin color"
Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on how much racism there has been in the US which is causing all the people with color to feel that they are not welcomed in their hometown. I was inspired by doing this Loteria Card by seeing how George Floyd got arrested and killed at the same time. I chose to draw two color hands with handcuffs as a subject matter because I wanted to represent how many people of color are getting arrested and discriminated in the US. The colors in the piece represent how much people there has been arrested and being slaves for other people and racism can still happen these days. For me personally, this card represents how much the people of color are leaving their hometown to leave to another town that is not that much racist to them and not being discriminated by
Student Biography: My name is Mauro Esparza, and I am a Senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my parents and my three sisters and myself. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was that I thought about how back then the cops would go to the people of color houses, and they would tell them to follow them, and they would take them to the other side of town and when everybody was there they build the wall so they won’t cross to the other side and when they saw someone attempting to jump over the wall they would kill them. The artistic process that I liked was painting the canvas. My life after high school will be to go to a university and then graduate from the university and then when I graduate from the university, I would work in my career that I studied for.
