Los Olvidados

Wilfrido C. Juarez Reyes

Refran: "The one who helps others, but they don’t help him."

Card Description: For my loteria card I wanted to share my thoughts on how field workers are forgotten for all the hard work that they do, they get very little pay in return and don't get the recognition that they deserve and also how badly they are treated by their bosses, or they don't get work benefits. I was inspired to do this loteria card because I have a lot of family members that work in fields, that are very hard workers but they don't get paid what they deserve, their work doesn’t give them benefits like other jobs would even though there working in the hot sun for 8-10 hours a day, like they don't get free health care for them or their kids. I chose a guy, lettuce fields, and a trail because I wanted to represent someone whose walking all alone after a hard day work with no support. The colors in this piece represent a man walking through the fields with his back hurting from the lettuce he's harvested all day. For me personally this card represents a man who even through all the hard work he has to do, they very little pay he gets, the respect he doesn’t get he doesn’t give up because his family relies on him to take care of them, just how my family tells me just because something is hard doesn’t mean you quit, success isn't just handed to you.

Student Biography: My name is Wilfrido Juarez and I am a Senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my brother and my Mom. What inspired me to draw my loteria card was I have family members that are field workers, and they have to work in the hot sun every day, bent over all day and they don't get paid a lot, they don't get the recognition they deserve, so I wanted to show people how millions of people have to live every day. The artistic process was pretty fun because I have never painted before, so this was my very first time actually painting something, I enjoyed it very much because it was relaxing and calming, it wasn't an assignment where I was just writing or reading. Life after high school will be joining the US Navy and then after pursuing a career in welding.
