La Guerra
Giovanni Chavez-Andrade
Refran: "A war that no one win, A war that changes lives,
They thought they won but who will be the judge of that?"
Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on violence towards immigrants, Ice separating families, unlawful acts towards immigrants. I chose War as a subject matter because in the land of Mexico there’s always violence between law enforcement and Cartels, same thing goes from civil rights activist fighting for immigrant rights while others support deporting them, then there are those escaping the conflict. The colors in the piece represent the time of violence which is the night. The night is where the actions take place, shootings, protests, escaping danger. For me personally, this card represents the life of escaping danger while trying to survive in the night, you never know if you will be caught by cartel members or the border patrol, you might lose your family if caught. But I want the audience to see experiencing danger and having to forcefully escape while looking out for cartel members and border patrol. This also highlights the battle between Mexico forces and the Cartel both of which will never stop fight, this also applies to civil rights activist fighting for immigrant rights.
Student Biography: My name is Giovanni Chavez-Andrade, and I am a Senior at Santa Maria high school. I live in Santa Maria, California with my family of 5. My parents are from Mexico in the state of Oaxaca. My father works in the fields, so I wanted to see what it feels like to work in the field. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was by seeing how badly field workers face during rough working conditions. Families separated from border portals, and more. The artistic process I feel like was alright, it takes time to get all your ideas together and having to do a sketch. Life after high school will be attend a CSU to continue my major of computer engineering.
