Heriberto Frias Mendoza

Refran: "El que se llevo al amigo, el que se quedo conmigo y el que acabo contigo."

Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on the problem of the drug addiction on Santa Maria and all the state of California, I chose the fentanyl addiction as a subject matter because I have some relationship with the topic, I lost a couple of friends due to that problem and I see it almost everyday on the streets, on my neighborhood and even on my school or places that are supposed that are safe, the colors in the piece represent the violence and the fake sense of pleasure the drugs give, the red spots represent the first thing and the saturated colors on the background represent the second points, also I used golden to represent the market of the both main components on the painting, the products: Drugs and the strawberry that is on the center. For me personally, this card represents a lot of feelings and bad experiences of my life, I knew a lot of people who now can't speak or breath or even walk because of their love for drugs, I know how this little world works and how what some people thinks that is the heaven slowly becomes the hell on earth. I want the audience to see what I see, I want them to see how big the problem is and I want them to know that we are on time to stop the problem, the message of the painting is in simple words "The strawberry is the main product of Santa Maria, but if we don't do something to stop the problem of drug addiction there is going to be another main product on the city".

Student Biography: My name is Heriberto Frias Mendoza, I am a Senior on the Santa Maria Highschool, I live in Santa Maria California with my dad and my sister, I get inspired by my personal experience with the world of the drug abuse and some friends who died because of this, the artistic process was simple, I already had that on mind for a personal drawing and it was based on some reading I was doing on the internet related to a project about my city for my Spanish class, where I take elements of the city's culture and some of the facts about the drug market. After high school, I want to be a doctor so I’m going to college and then after a couple years I will go to the school medicine.
