El Education Inequity

Kaeyla M. Pacheco

Refran: "Education is a right, but inequality makes it an unattainable privilege for many."

Card Description: For my Loteria card, I wanted to share my thoughts on the social injustice issue of inequity in education. I chose this subject matter because I believe not a lot of people are aware of how there are barriers for students to overcome to get quality education. That’s why out of the variety of social injustice issues in our world I decided to go with education inequity. With two very different schools divided by a fence, my artwork serves as a visual representation of the injustice issue by highlighting educational inequity and inequality. I used colors that symbolize poverty, despair, and sorrow in the lower portion of my artwork. As compared to above, on the other side of the fence, the colors represent prosperity, brightness, and clarity. For me personally at first, this card was just another assignment that I had to do, but as I started to research and learn more about the matter, I started to realize how much more there was to the subject. However, I want my artwork to visually demonstrate the inequity to the viewer of education.

Student Biography: I'm Kaeyla Pacheco, and I attend Santa Maria High School as a senior. I live in Santa Maria with my mom and 2 younger sisters, Sally and Dulce. However, I also have two older siblings, Tyler and Lydia, who I do not live with. Fun fact: Although I grew up in SM, I was born in Santa Barbara. My inspiration for my Loteria card, El Education Inequity, was to bring awareness to the social injustice issue that the school systems are unfair and biased. I was very passionate about displaying my artistic process through my painting. My intention was for the audience to perceive the inequality in education through my painting, even if they were unable to understand the title. Life after high school, I plan to be the first generation in my family to go to a university and want to become an interior designer. When I become financially stable after being a designer I plan to buy houses and flip them for profit or to rent them.
