Maribel Morelos-Zeferino
Grade: 12
Card Number: 28
Refran: "An endless cycle, which children and adults go through"
Card Description: For my Loteria Card I wanted to share my thoughts on Culture Traditions. I chose Dia de los Muertos as a subject matter because it’s a great custom that when celebrated along with the memories that are created and cherish, It also instills valuable messages, morals, and lessons. In addition to honoring our dead loved ones when celebrating we spend treasurable time with family. We are also taught to not fear death after all it’s a part of the cycle of life. I wanted to make a simple design and made a half face with half a skull to precisely represent death as part of our existence. I made the background in light and dark colors to represent the world of the living and the underworld and the flowers of cempasuchil because they are believed for to lead the dead to their families.
Student Biography: My name is Maribel Morelos-Zeferino, and I am Senior at Santa Maria High school. I live in Santa Maria, California with my siblings and parents. I chose Dia de los Muertos as my subject for the Loteria project. What inspired me to draw this for my Loteria card was that it is a tradition I grew up with and enjoy a lot. The artistic process was fun. I liked doing further research about a custom I participate in.
