Sarahe Duran
Grade: 12
Card Number: 1
Refran: "Tears and cries are silenced in the dark
Our voice is our strength and guide to the light."
Card Description: For my Loteria card I wanted to share my thoughts on how it’s a big problem for us women not to have the same rights men have. That is why I picked to talk about women’s rights because there is so much to say. I chose women rights as a subject matter because I feel like most people just forget it and move on like nothing happened. The colors in the piece represent quite and not being able to speak up because most people do not even care about women’s rights as much as we need to care for. For me personally, this card represents that we can’t always have our mouths shut. I feel like more women should stand up for themselves and not care about what men will say. That’s one big thing most women try to speak up but when they do a male with more power speaks down on them then that’s when we give up and do not try talking. That’s what it represents for me.
Student Biography: My name is Sarahe Duran and I am a Senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my mama and my brother. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was that there is a lot of stuff to talk about women's rights on how girls get scared to talk about how they feel, so my Loteria card was of a young woman covering her mouth because women won’t talk about their feelings. I just want to bring awareness to the topic. Life after high school I will try my best to be a police officer because I like to help people and try making them feel better. That’s what I wanna do and what I made my Loteria card about.
