El Sueño
Lizbeth J. Jarquin-Hernandez
Grade: 12
Card Number: 20
Refran: "Working from day to night,
and it's still not enough."
Card Description: For my Loteria Card, I wanted to share my thoughts on farm workers since they always have to be working to have money to pay bills, rent and necessities. Farmworkers then don't have as much time to be worrying about their health or what they want since most of the money goes towards something else. I choose social justice as a subject matter because I've noticed that farm workers don't have the benefits like healthcare like other jobs do. I was inspired to do this Loteria Card from my experience because I've worked in the fields before and it's really sad seeing how many people immigrate to the U.S to have a better future/life just to end up having back problems or health issues in which many farm workers can't get any help since they don't have health insurance or don't provide enough resources in the fields.
Student Biography: My name is Lizbeth Jarquin Hernandez, and I am a Senior at Santa Maria High School. I live in Santa Maria, California with my parents and my younger brother. What inspired me to draw my Loteria card was on how farm workers come to the U.S to have a better future but end up having it worse since they end up with back problems or health issues in which many farm workers can't get any help because they don't have any health insurance. The artistic process was peaceful since we got to paint during English class which is not really seen. After high school I plan on going to a trade school to become an ultrasound tech or a medical assistant.
